Forklift Alternatives for Canadian Warehouses

A full sit-down forklift is often more machine — and more cost, training, and floor space — than a job actually needs. For most horizontal pallet movement, an electric pallet jack does the work at a fraction of the price. For low-to-mid racking, an electric walkie stacker raises loads up to 3.5 m (about 138 in) without a forklift. And when you genuinely need forklift-style height in a tight footprint, our compact 3-wheel SEF1545 electric forklift reaches 4.5 m at 1,500 kg. Electric pallet jacks and walkie stackers need no CSA B335 forklift-operator certification (only workplace training under OHS), fit aisles as narrow as 1.8–2.4 m, and run clean indoors. This guide maps each alternative to the lift height, capacity, budget, and compliance it fits — so you buy exactly the equipment the task calls for.

Forklift Alternatives — What to Use Instead

Match the alternative to the task: ground transport, low-to-mid stacking, or true height in a tight space.

Electric Pallet Jacks — Ground Transport

For moving pallets across a floor, dock, or truck, an electric pallet jack replaces a forklift entirely. The SESR15 carries 1,500 kg and the SELR20 carries 2,000 kg, lifting a pallet just clear of the floor for transport. No forklift certification, no ventilation concerns, and a purchase price a fraction of a forklift's.

Electric Stackers — Raise to 3.5 m

When you need to lift pallets into racking, an electric walkie stacker is the no-license alternative: the SST15 reaches about 2.5 m, the SSE15 about 3 m, and the SST15+ reaches the third rack level at 3.5 m (138 in), all at 1,500 kg. A pedestrian stacker needs no CSA B335 forklift certification and works in far tighter aisles than a sit-down forklift.

Compact 3-Wheel Electric Forklift

When the job truly needs forklift height, the SEF1545 3-wheel electric forklift lifts 1,500 kg to 4.5 m (14.8 ft) in a tight turning circle — a smaller, cleaner, lower-cost alternative to a large internal-combustion forklift. As a powered forklift it does require CSA B335 operator certification, unlike the jacks and stackers above.

Cost, Certification & Aisle Space

Electric pallet jacks typically run about $3,500–$8,000 CAD versus $15,000–$50,000+ for a forklift, with much lower five-year running costs. Pallet jacks and stackers need only workplace-specific OHS training — not the multi-day CSA B335 forklift certification — and operate in 1.8–2.4 m aisles versus roughly 3.0–3.6 m for a sit-down forklift. All Sumachay units are lithium-electric for clean indoor use.

How to Choose a Forklift Alternative

The right alternative comes down to how high you lift, how heavy, how tight your aisles are, and what certification you want to carry. Work through these four factors in order.

1

Start with lift height

Ground-level pallet transport → an electric pallet jack. Stacking into racking up to about 3.5 m → an electric walkie stacker (SST15+). Higher than a stacker reaches, or heavier duty → a forklift such as the 4.5 m SEF1545. Measure your top beam height first; it decides the category.

2

Certification & training

Electric pallet jacks and pedestrian stackers do not require CSA B335 forklift-operator certification in Canada — employers still provide workplace-specific OHS training, typically a short session. A powered forklift (including our SEF1545) does require CSA B335 certification, so choosing a jack or stacker where it fits lowers your training burden.

3

Cost & total cost of ownership

An electric pallet jack is roughly $3,500–$8,000 CAD against $15,000–$50,000+ for a forklift, and its five-year running cost is far lower — no engine, no propane, minimal maintenance on a sealed lithium drive. Buying the lightest machine that does the job is usually the cheapest over its life.

4

Aisle width & indoor use

Pallet jacks and walkie stackers work in 1.8–2.4 m aisles, versus roughly 3.0–3.6 m for a sit-down forklift, so you can keep tighter racking and more pallet positions. All Sumachay alternatives are lithium-electric with no exhaust, so they run clean in food, pharma, and other indoor environments.

When you still need a forklift

If you routinely lift above ~3.5 m, handle loads beyond a stacker's 1,500 kg, or work rough outdoor terrain, a forklift is the right tool — and our compact 3-wheel SEF1545 (1,500 kg, 4.5 m) is a smaller, cleaner, lower-cost option than a large internal-combustion unit. Many operations run both: jacks and stackers for the bulk of moves, a forklift for the tall or heavy exceptions.

Forklift Alternatives vs a Conventional Forklift

Lift height, capacity, operator certification, and typical cost across the alternatives and a conventional forklift for reference.

Jacks and stackers need no CSA B335 forklift certification; powered forklifts (including the SEF1545) do. Conventional-forklift figures are typical industry reference values, not a Sumachay spec. See each product page for full specifications and live pricing.

FAQ: Forklift Alternatives

Common questions about replacing a forklift with an electric pallet jack, walkie stacker, or compact electric forklift.

It depends on the task. For moving pallets across a floor or dock, an electric pallet jack (1,500–2,000 kg) replaces a forklift entirely. For lifting into racking up to about 3.5 m, an electric walkie stacker does the job with no forklift certification. When you need true forklift height in a tight space, the compact 3-wheel SEF1545 lifts 1,500 kg to 4.5 m. For a head-to-head, see Pallet Jack vs Forklift.

Electric pallet jacks and pedestrian (walkie) stackers do not require CSA B335 forklift-operator certification. Employers must still provide workplace-specific training under OHS, but that is typically a short session rather than a multi-day certification. A powered forklift — including our 3-wheel SEF1545 — does require CSA B335 operator certification.

Sumachay electric walkie stackers reach roughly 2.5 m on the SST15, about 3 m on the SSE15, and 3.5 m (138 in) on the SST15+, all at 1,500 kg. A forklift goes higher — our 3-wheel SEF1545 reaches 4.5 m — so if your top beam is beyond about 3.5 m, a forklift is the right category. Measure your highest rack level before choosing.

Usually, yes. An electric pallet jack is roughly $3,500–$8,000 CAD compared with $15,000–$50,000+ for a forklift, and its five-year total cost of ownership is far lower thanks to a sealed lithium drive with no engine or propane. Electric walkie stackers sit between the two. Buying the lightest machine that covers the task is typically cheapest over its life.

Yes. Electric pallet jacks and walkie stackers operate in aisles as narrow as 1.8–2.4 m, versus roughly 3.0–3.6 m for a sit-down forklift, so you keep tighter racking and more pallet positions. All Sumachay units are lithium-electric with no exhaust, so they run clean indoors in food, pharmaceutical, and similar environments.

Choose a forklift when you routinely lift above about 3.5 m, handle loads beyond a stacker's 1,500 kg, or work rough outdoor terrain. In those cases our compact 3-wheel SEF1545 electric forklift (1,500 kg, 4.5 m) is a smaller, cleaner, lower-cost option than a large internal-combustion unit. Many operations run both: jacks and stackers for most moves and a forklift for the tall or heavy exceptions.
