What Is an Electric Pallet Jack?

An electric pallet jack has two powered systems. A traction motor drives the steer/drive wheel so the operator steers the load rather than pushing it, and an electric hydraulic pump raises the forks off the floor. The operator controls both from a tiller (steering handle) with a thumb throttle for travel and buttons to raise and lower.

The forks slide into the two openings of a standard pallet, the pump lifts the load 85 to 205 mm off the ground, and the drive motor moves it to its destination. Because the lift is only high enough to clear the floor, an electric pallet jack is a horizontal-transport tool — it moves pallets, it does not stack them onto racking. For that you need a pallet stacker or a forklift.

Modern units use lithium-ion batteries that charge from a standard Canadian 110–120V outlet in about 4 to 6 hours and need no watering or equalization, unlike older lead-acid packs.

Electric pallet jacks come in two main configurations:

• Walk-behind (walkie) — the operator walks alongside or behind the unit, steering with the tiller. Walkies are compact, low-cost, and ideal for shorter distances and moderate volumes. The Sumachay SESR15 and SELR20 are walkie models.
• Ride-on (rider) — the operator stands or sits on a platform and rides with the load, which suits long travel distances and high-throughput distribution centres. The Sumachay SER30 is a 3-tonne ride-on model.

Every electric pallet jack shares the same core parts: forks with load rollers, a powered hydraulic lift, a traction motor and drive wheel, a battery, a charger, and a tiller with throttle and lift/lower controls. Note that an electric pallet jack is mast-less: it has no vertical mast, which is what separates it from a stacker or forklift.

Electric pallet jacks are the workhorse of horizontal material handling. Common applications include:

• Dock-to-staging transport — unloading trucks and moving pallets to staging or storage areas.
• Order picking — moving between aisles to build mixed pallets in distribution and e-commerce fulfilment.
• Retail restocking — moving stock from backrooms to the sales floor; narrow-fork models like the SESR15-N fit tight aisles and delivery trucks.
• Manufacturing line feed — moving raw materials and finished goods between workstations.

They are best suited to operations moving roughly 20 to 150 pallets per shift over smooth, flat floors. Below about 15 to 20 moves a day, a manual jack is usually more economical; for stacking to racking or handling loads over 3,000 kg, a forklift is required.

Most electric walk-behind pallet jacks are rated for 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) or 2,000 kg (4,400 lb). Choose 1,500 kg for standard retail and e-commerce pallets under about 1,000 kg, and 2,000 kg for manufacturing and distribution loads that need headroom. Ride-on models go higher — the Sumachay SER30 is rated to 3,000 kg (6,613 lb). A useful rule is to size for at least 20 percent above your heaviest routine load, since running near maximum capacity shortens equipment life.

On batteries: lithium-ion is now standard on Sumachay electric pallet jacks. It charges faster than lead-acid, holds voltage consistently through the charge cycle, needs no maintenance, and supports opportunity charging during breaks. Battery size (in amp-hours) sets runtime: a 30Ah pack suits a busy single shift, while a 100Ah pack — as on the SELR20+ — runs extended or multi-shift operation without mid-day charging.
